TENET

The last of three projects completed during the Summer of Style Frames course with designer Justin Harder/Claus Studios.

For the final project, the assignment was to create opening or ending credits for a film. Movies are my thing so picking the right one was a challenge. I did my best to search for something that didn’t have a stylized opening or ending credit sequence so that I was able to start completely from scratch.

After much deliberation, I chose to do an ending credits for Tenet. The challenge was to take this high-concept film and simplify the story as best as possible while being cohesive with the look of the picture.

I love the use of red & blue within the film to signify which direction of time the characters are moving in. My idea was to use these colors and pair them with the actors but each frame has a different sequence for no two characters go through the same time changes. Red denotes moving forward through time and blue means moving backward through time. Although purple is never used, I thought it would be a clever addition to illustrate how a character is singularly moving backward in time while the scene is set in the present. The final frame takes inspiration from a real-life artifact called the Sator Square. It contains words along with ‘tenet’ and derives from Pompeii; all the words act as palindromes which were used in the film.
